Bio for Tommy Vinson
Tommy Vinson was born Dec. 24, 1946, in Tupelo, MS. He grew up in the home of a sharecropper, the third of four children. He married his high school sweetheart Rose when they were nineteen. The Lord has blessed them with three grown children, (Barry-56; John -53; Vicki-50) eight grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.
Tommy came to full assurance of his salvation six weeks before graduating from high school. He was discipled by the Navigators while serving as an Air Traffic Controller in the United States Air Force.
Tommy graduated from the Air Traffic Control Academy in Oklahoma City, Blue Mountain Christian University. He attended Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary and graduated Luther Rice Theological Seminary. In 1983 Tommy was honored by Florida Bible College with the Doctor of Divinity.
This year marks Tommy’s fifty seventh year of preaching the gospel. He pastored churches in MS, TN, and FL. His last three pastorates were Senior Pastor of the Leawood Baptist Church in Memphis, TN, First Baptist Church of Winter Park, Florida, and as Teaching Pastor at the First Baptist Church in Collierville, TN. He resigned that position in 2013 to enter full time itinerant ministry of teaching and preaching. He spent the first five years doing pastor training in India until Covid hit. For the past five years he has served as interim preacher for several churches, including The Point in Hernando, MS., Germantown Baptist Church and Kirby Woods in Memphis, TN.
Over the years he has been active in serving his denomination at both the local, state and national level. Until moving to TN he served on the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has been privileged to preach in both the MS and TN state conventions and state Pastor’s Conferences. He has preached in several hundred revivals/conferences through the years. He served as President of the Florida Baptist Pastor’s Conference for 2007.
Presently he serves on the Board of Trustees for Blue Mountain Christian University. One of his passions is being involved in missions. Before covid this took him often to South Asia where his daughter’s family, including four of his grandchildren, served with the International Mission Board.
